Destination Europe: NCAA College Stars on their way out -by Matthias Haufer

With the top European leagues in Spain and Italy almost exclusively relying on seasoned veterans of overseas basketball, other countries as Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Poland have become preferred destination of former NCAA standouts who could not secure a spot on an NBA roster. Let's take a look at the senior class of 2006 and the places they are headed to.

Belgium

One of the up-and-coming basketball countries, Belgian teams managed to attract several big-time NCAA players: Eric Hicks (6'6''-G/F-83, college: Cincinnati), the great Cincinnati energizer, signed with Telindus BC Oostende. For many it was a surprise that as one of the premier shotblockers in the nation he could not land an NBA roster spot. Size concerns are his biggest drawback, but they should not stop him from dominating Belgian competition with his strength, athleticism and hustle.

Verviers-Pepinster also inked a big name from the US college ranks: Iowa's Greg Brunner (6'7''-F-83, college: Iowa), like Hicks an All-Big East 1st team choice and a Portsmouth invitee, will play there in 06/07. In Nick Lewis (6'10''-F/C-83, agency: Elfus-Siegel Management (ESM), college: San Diego), a third Portsmouth invitee and possible draft candidate opted to head to Belgium: He signed with Passe Partout Basket Groot Leuven. Amazing how even small Belgian teams manage to come up with the money to sign players of that caliber.

France

French teams mostly refrained from signing rookies so far. Only some of the less fortunate Pro A teams acquired first-year talent: Chorale de Roanne Basket signed Tony Skinn (6'1''-G-83, agency: Elfus-Siegel Management (ESM), college: George Mason), member of the George Mason fairy-tale team that made it to the Final Four. Roderick Middleton (6'3''-G/F-82, college: Buffalo) out of Buffalo joined Stade Clermontois Basket Auvergne. In Pro B, Hermine Nantes Atlantique once again took the Davidson route acquiring two players from the same school in Brendan Winters (6'5''-G/F-83, college: Davidson) and Kenny Grant (6'2''-G-82, college: Davidson).

Germany

So far, EWE Baskets Oldenburg made the biggest news by welcoming Bronx legend and former Pittsburgh Panther Carl Krauser (6'2''-G-81, college: Pittsburgh) The playmaker with the boxer's attitude is sure to become and instant fan favorite in Northern Germany. ALBA Berlin signed Johannes Herber (6'6''-G-83, college: W.Virginia), the German native and former West Virginia playmaker. Kevin Gardner (6'8''-F-83, college: Boston U.), a very solid forward from Boston University, now plays for last year's surprise team Eisbaeren Bremerhaven. Nate Harris (6'7''-F-83, college: Utah St.) chose EnBW Ludwigsburg while John Bowler (6'9''-F-84, agency: LimeLight, college: E.Michigan) headed off to Telekom Baskets Bonn where he will form a fearsome frontcourt with Tyray Pearson (6'7''-F-80, college: Iowa St.). All-around guard John Goldsberry (6'3''-G-82, college: NC-Wilmington) was picked up by Bayer Giants Leverkusen. Walter Tigers Tuebingen inked Matt Kiefer (6'10''-F-83, college: Purdue) and Johnny Gray (6'1''-G-83, college: Pacific), Pacific's excellent PG and son of former Olympic bronze medal winner Johnny Sr. Deutsche Bank Skyliners Frankfurt chose athletic swingman Jimmy McKinney (6'4''-G-83, college: Missouri) to help them improve on their dismal 2005/06 season. Last but not least, New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig signed Ashanti Cook (6'2''-G, agency: Worldwide Hoops, college: Georgetown), one of the key players on the great Georgetown team, to a one-year contract. Other high-profile signings are already in the making...

The Netherlands

In Holland, Demon Astronauts Amsterdam surprisingly chose little-known Lamar Hurd (6'4''-G-83, agency: Rose Professional Mngmnt, college: Oregon St.). MPC Capitals signed high scoring Alain Laroche (6'6''-F-83, college: N.Florida). Versatile James Mathis (6'7''-F-84, agency: Court Side, college: Niagara) joins Weert. BS Leiden acquired top-notch defender DeEarnest McLemore (6'1''-G-83, agency: Court Side, college: Wagner) for the upcoming campaign. Woon!Aris Leeuwarden stunned people by signing three Division II standouts in sharp-shooter Kemmy Burgess (6'1''-G-81, agency: Rasmussen Services, college: Alaska-Anchorage), Ryan Diggs (6'2''-G-83, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: W.Washington) and Tyler Amaya (6'6''-F-82, agency: R.H.Consultancy, college: W.Washington). Patrick Beilein (6'4''-G-83, college: W.Virginia), the son of West Virginia head coach John, will play for Zwolle. Kellen Easley (6'7''-G/F-84, agency: Interperformances, college: Missouri St.) will continue his career with Polynom Giants.

TAQUAN DEAN: play/guardia uscito dalla sorprendente louisville di pitino, ha davvero un grande talento e pensavo venisse scelto sinceramente, almeno al secondo giro, penetratore sublime fisico esplosivo, tiratore mortifero quando conta, insomma non ha paura di prendersi le responsabilità, peccato che l'NBA sia già stracolma di giocatori del genere...in europa farebbe strabene!
