Grecia: Pana e Olympiacos facili, l’Aris in semifinale dopo 7 anni!

Confidando sull'apporto della sua coppia colored Castle-Brewer (39 punti e 17 falli subiti in due) e su un incredibile Ante Grgurevic (15 con 6/10 al tiro e 17 rimbalzi!), l'Aris di Andrea Mazzon torna alle semifinali dopo sette anni di assenza: l'ultima volta la giocò durante la stagione 1998/99, con Zvi Sherf in panchina e leader in campo come Panagiotis Liadelis e da Giorgos Sigalas, presente anche oggi.

Allora arrivò la sconfitta contro l'Olympiacos e quella nella finale per il 3° posto (che vale un posto in Eurolega) contro il PAOK per via dello scandalo doping che coinvolse Muursepp e Agellidis. I gialloneri si rifiutarono di giocare dopo la pubblicazione della notizia, quando la serie li vedeva in svantaggio 2-1.

Stavolta l'Aris avrà di fronte il Panathinaikos (Tsartsaris 11/13 ai liberi, Batiste 13+7 in 18 minuti, Diamantidis 5/6 al tiro e 5 assist), che si è sbarazzato agevolmente del Panionios, mentre l'Olympiacos (Lewis 4/6 da 3, Seibutis 3/3 da 3 e 4 assist) attende la sua rivale tra PAOK e Maroussi.

Panathinaikos Athens and Zeljko Obradovic beat Olympiakos and Jonas Kazlauskas in the most crucial game of the series (they just made the 1-0). The quarters were: 23-19, 45-44, 64-56 and the final 82-76. The game was a real old time classic derby, with two quite equal teams. The three out of the four quarters were very close while only in the third quarter the Greens were able to make their top performance taking the difference even to 13points which was the biggest in the game. The top scorer of the game was the Slovenian international Jaka Lakovic (186-G-78) who scored 19 points, 2 assists and 1 steal while he won 7 fouls, followed by the top "thief" in Europe, Dimitris Diamantidis (196-G-80) scored 12 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals while he won 3 fouls, and all these in 23 minutes. From the reds, who showed that they are very tough and that the series most probably will go to 5 games, top scorer was Nikos Barlos (202-F-79) and Lewis, they scored 12 points each but a forgotten guard nearly steal the show and the victory for his team, Ivan Koljevic (186-G-84) who scored two consecutive three pointers and brought the game into the minimum difference up until the particular minute (36th) finishing a great come back from Olympiakos players, a very good game from Nikos Chatzis (196-G-76), the veteran player scored 11 points (seven of which in the first six minutes) but for some reason he was forgotten in the bench!!

The Reds dashed down 35 rebounds (24-11) while the Greens only 27 (22-5).

Both teams had four players with double figures.

The Greens had 17 assists while the Reds only 8!

MVP of the game according to the Tendex was Dimitris Diamantidis who had 1.038

In the game for the 3rd and 4th place, Maroussi Honda Athens thrashed Aris Thessaloniki 74-59, in game which finished five minutes earlier than the other one. The team of the Italian head coach Andrea Mazzon was not the team with the freshness that all the fans knew (especially the last games of the regular season). It seems that the five games series of the semi finals against Olympiakos were just the beginning for the team of the Greek national Head Coach as his players were playing tonight as if they just started the regular season!! The quarters were: 23-12, 40-29, 64-43 and 74-59. The game was a continuous monologue for the team of Panagiotis Yiannakis , who had as top scorers of his team the usual suspects Alexandros Kuritsis (195-G-82) and Roderick Blakney (181-G-76, college: S.Carolina St.) scored 21 and 17 respectively while from Aris who was tragic, the top scorer was Ante Grgurevic (199-F-75, agency: Interperformances) who scored 11 points!!

Panathinaikos Athens beat Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus 68-79 and is now ready to make another sweep to the title since the third game is back to his home court next Wednesday. Coach Jonas Kazlauskas use his baby Shaq (Sofocles Schortsianitis (206-F-85)) very well, the young Greek center was relentless with nearly perfect statistics 2/4 free throws, 8/8 two pointers, 14 rebounds and one assist in 26 minutes and a Tendex of 0.89.

What else, a coach could ask from one player? The answer is simple, what about the rest of his teammates?

Well, this answer is more difficult for the Lithuanian Coach and the Reds since only Tyus Edney (178-G-73, college: UCLA) realised that the game was crucial and he knew that, unless all his team mates plays in the maximum of their strength, the Greens would have harm his team by making the double. The veteran guard scored 16 points with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals but he was all alone since his compatriot Quincy Lewis (201-F-77, college: Minnesota) was in another court, he only scored 8 points with 1/6 two pointers and 1/4 three pointers with very bad fourth quarter and nearly zero defence. The Croatian Andrija Zizic (207-F/C-80) had zero points in 15 minutes and Panagotis Vasilopoulos (202-F-84) scored 3 points in 26 minutes. Having in mind that one of the best players of the last game in Panathinaikos's court, Nikos Barlos (202-F-79) was unable to help his team mates as he was not included in the 12 of the mission, due to his injury.

The game was a real derby the first 15 minutes where the score was 35-32 for the Reds, when coach Zeljko Obradovic change his defence into zone, the result was that Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus lost the truck with the basket, and remain 5 minutes without a basket!! When a team is playing in the finals (and in the home court) and has such a big "dead" in scoring, time, then it minimises the chances for a successful result, especially when the opponent's name is Panathinaikos Athens and Coach Zeljko Obradovic , the Green champs made a 10-0 initially and then at the beginning of the fourth quarter another 15-0 and they actually finished the game.

The Green team was a real TEAM, all the players were magnificent, from the top player of the game (Jaka Lakovic) till the youngest player and with the minimum time, player, (Dusan Sakota (209-F-86) who scored 3 points, 1 assist and 1 steal in 6 minutes)

The top player in another game against Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus (as another murderer who returns in the scene of the crime, as all the previous years!) was the Slovenian Jaka Lakovic (186-G-78), the international guard who finished the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 5 fouls against in 36 minutes, was in another game very good especially in the second half who scored nearly all his points, from a close distance was the player orchestra Dimitris Diamantidis (196-G-80), the amazing guard scored 12 points, with 8 fouls against, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal and 1 block shot! in 38 minutes. Last but not least, Vasilis Spanoulis (193-G-82, agency: Beo Basket) was the man to put a tombstone to the red dreams, in the last quarter the young Greek guard scored his 11 out of 15 points in the last eight minutes! Panathinaikos stole the ball ten times while the reds stole it only 4!

The Greens had one rebound more than the reds (33-34) even though until the 35th minutes the Reds had six rebounds more than the greens!!

In assists and block shots the two teams were equal (11 and 2 respectively)

After the end of the game the red fans created big troubles for the green players and the police force as they were throwing stones, coins and refreshment teens! The Red player in their honour, tried to prevent their fans by trying to calm them but..... Unfortunately the red fans went into the court and the policemen "answered" with chemicals and now.... the reds are (most probably) getting a big penalty from the Greek basketball federation, as the rules now are very tough. Probably they will "loose" their home court for a couple of games next season...unless they make the surprise next Wednesday…

Maroussi - Aris 1-1

Aris Thessaloniki paid back, his opponent, with the same coin, the Thesalloniki team thrash Maroussi Honda Athens with thirty points difference in a game that finished just some minutes ago. The final score was 84-54 and the series is now 1-1 both, in the psychological point of view and in mathematical point of view as both victories were really very big for the home teams.

Mike Wilkinson (204-F-81, college: Wisconsin) was really superb, the young American forward was absolutely fantastic and scored 25 points with 100% in two point shots (he had 7 out of 7 shots) he had 2/4 three pointers and 5/5 free throws, he dashed down 7 rebounds and he blocked his opponents twice, all these in 31 minutes, he was definitely the MVP of the game, he had 1.171 from the Tendex!!, from a closed distance was Terrell Castle (182-G-72, agency: Court Side, college: Nicholls St.) who scored 12 points with 3 three pointers but he was the main reason of the Blakney's "bad" day since he marked him and his defence was truly effective.

Andrea Mazzon , the head coach of Aris Thessaloniki use all his twelve players in the game while only Savas Kamberidis (187-G-78) didn't score, all the rest scored at least two points each.

The team of Maroussi Honda Athens and Coach Panagiotis Yiannakis had their worst game ever! The very good defence on Roderick Blakney (181-G-76, college: S.Carolina St.) and Alexandros Kuritsis (195-G-82) from the "Martians" was very tough but clean and the whole team from the northern suburb areas of Athens blocked from the very beginning, they couldn't score and most of their offensive schemes were ending with either a crazy, helpless shot or with a hopeless three pointer from eight meters. One of the negative elements of Maroussi team was the American forward Jarred Homan who scored 2/4 free shots and 2/8 two pointers, he lost most of the rebounding battles from the Super Wilkinson and Ryan Stack, he was generally in another bad day, he ended the game with 6 points in 20 minutes.

The only player who tried and finally scored double figure from the Athenians was Alexandros Kuritsis but ... it was too late since most of his points came in the third quarter were everything were "set", he ended the game with 12 points while his team mate Roderick Blakney scored only 6 points and Yiannakis had to take him off the game and on the bench very early (he only played 25 minutes) since the defence on him was really very decisive. The quarters were: 22-15, 50-24, 67-42, and 84-54.

Next game will take place in Agios Thomas, Maroussi's home court, next Wednesday.

Panathinaikos - Olympiakos 3-0

Once upon a time Gary Lineker, a famous British football striker asked what is football (for the Americans soccer)? His answer was very simple and to the point. He said that football is a game consists of 2 teams with 11 players each and the target is to score a goal but at the end the national team of Germany is winning the game!!

Well, something similar could be answered if some one asks a Greek basketball player the same question by changing the sport into Basketball! That, is a game, consists of two teams of five players each team and the target is to score a basket but at the end Panathinaikos will be the champion!!

It is true! Panathinaikos Athens added another title in his long list and successful history and since some hours ago is the new champion of Greece for the season 2005 – 2006, breaking many records, one of them being the first team in history which wins the title without a single loss in the play offs (once again the same achievement has been done by Aris Thessaloniki of 80's but the league was different then and not professional 100%)

Panathinaikos beat Olympiakos with final score being 82-70 and the quarters being: 23-22, 39-33, 58-49 and the final 82-70.

Top scorer of the game was Jaka Lakovic (186-G-78) in another great performance, he scored 18 points in 33 minutes with 3/4 free throws, 3/4 two pointers and 3/7 three pointers, he won 7 fouls, he dashed down 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The performance of Vasilis Spanoulis (193-G-82, agency: Beo Basket) (the only player who "tasted" his first title) was very good, he scored 12 points with 1/2 free throws, 4/7 two pointers and 1/4 three pointers, he had 4 assists and 1 stolen ball.

From the Reds of Jonas Kazlauskas , the top scorer was Tyus Edney (178-G-73, college: UCLA) with 18 points followed by the Baby Shaq, Sofocles Schortsianitis (206-F-85) with 12 points with perfect stats, he had 2/2 free throws and 5/5 two pointers 2 rebounds and 1 assist in only 15 minutes.

The game was a derby in the first half but when the Green team changed "gears" the rhythm of the game changed and the difference got bigger and bigger. By the beginning of the third quarter everybody knew who was going to be the winner as the difference went up to thirteen points and the red players showed that they couldn't actually follow their opponents. The final score came naturally without any real problem for Zeljko Obradovic 's team.

Small details of the game

The Green fans tried to "get even" with the red fans (and their behaviour in last Sunday's game) so at the 6th minute of the game the green hooligans throw stones and fireworks against the red bench were they wounded quite serious Dimitris Kalaitzidis (198-F/G-85) and Nikos Argiropoulos (188-G-78), in fact Dimitris Kalaitzidis (198-F/G-85) has some serious problem with his left ear. The green team will most probably punished as the reds did today.

The Green players won the "air battle" as they dashed down 30 rebounds while the reds only 23

Panathinaikos had 19 assists while Olympiakos had only 10, the same with the block shots, Panathinaikos had 2 while Olympiakos had none!

11 out of 12 players scored (only Scepanovic didn't but he played only 1.25 minutes) while from the Pereus team 8 out of 12 scored.

4 red players had double digits (Papamakarios, Edney, Lewis and Baby Shaq) on the other hand only 3 green players had double digits (Spanoulis, Lakovic and Batiste)

MVP of the game according to Tendex was the American forward Mike Batiste who scored 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in only 16 minutes!!

Maroussi - Aris 2-1

For the third and fourth position, Maroussi beat quite easy the team of Aris with 71-56 having as a top scorer for another night the American Blakney who scored 24 points in 32 minutes! the series goes now to Thesaloniki where Aris will have to win in order to straighten up the series to 2-2.

Mike Batiste (203-F-77, college: Arizona St.) was the MVP in the final game between Panathinaikos Athens and Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus last night. The American forward scored 11 points in 16 minutes but his vital and most wanted help in all the other categories of the game, both inside with rebounds, and outside with good defence and assists made him the most valuable player of the finals and at the same time is "forcing" in a way the Gianakopoulos brothers (owners of Panathinaikos Athens) to "book him" for at least another year. The American power forward was the most steady player of the Greek champions and together with Dimitris Diamantidis (196-G-80) were the backbone of the green team and the great sweep, they have done in the play offs with all the three opponents. The second consecutive title was for the green team even more easy this year than last year where they lost a couple of games in the final stage of the league. This seazon the team of Coach Obradovic had two negative results in the regular seazon (against Olympiakos and PAOK away) and since then, they simply forgot what is the color of the defeated team's slipt.

Now the owner of the team Gianakopoulos is promising a couple of really good transfers in order to get everything next year including the European title of cource.
