There are only a handful of clubs in Europe whose international silverware collection surpasses the trophy case of FIBA Europe Cup Italian Semi-Finalists, Openjobmetis Varese.

Pallacanestro Varese have in its collection five European Champions Cup (Euroleague) trophies, and two European Cup Winners' Cup (Saporta Cup) trophies, while they have also conquered the FIBA Intercontinental Cup on three occasions.

Olimpia Milano, by far the most successful Italian club domestically with 25 league titles, has one European trophy more than Varese in total (eight) but have won the Euroleague three times rather than five and the Intercontinental Cup only once.

Having established beyond reasonable doubt the impressive pedigree of Varese, it could be argued that a potential conquest of the FIBA Europe Cup this weekend would not really add much to the Italian club's legacy.

But in actual fact, if Varese were to lift the FIBA Europe Cup they would accomplish a feat of equal, if not bigger, magnitude as all those trophy conquests during their glorious past.

For starters, the club is no longer the European powerhouse it was back in the day, when 'fantastic Ignis Varese' sides led by Dino Meneghin, Bob Morse or Manuel Raga brushed aside the competition.

Varese's last international success was the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1980, while they last celebrated the Italian Serie A title in 1999.

In the past two decades the club has even been relegated to Serie B twice, albeit they earned promotion the following year on both occasions.

Secondly one can think of very few teams, certainly there is none among this year's FIBA Europe Cup Semi-Finalists, which have made it to the Final Four of a European competition after going through so many changes and over so many bumps during the course of the year.

Varese have had to change three-fifths of their starting line-up as they parted ways with both Roko Leni Ukic and Ramon Galloway after the Round of 32 and with Mouhammad Faye after Game 2 of their Play-Off series against Royal Hali Gaziantep.

Those three players were averaging a combined 32.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, 9.6 assists per game, so to say that making up for their contribution was an extremely difficult assignment for coach Paolo Moretti would be an understatement.

His task was not helped by the fact that Kristjan Kangur had joined the team a bit late in the season and required some time to recover full form, while sharp-shooter Rihards Kuksiks struggled to find game pace as he missed a few days now and then due to injury.

In February however, Varese signed Christopher Wright from Israeli side Hapoel Holon and while incorporating a point guard so late in the season is a tremendous challenge, everything started to click for the Italian team after this move.

Moretti's men knocked out Gaziantep in the Round of 16 and then Port of Antwerp Giants in the Quarter-Finals, taking full advantage of the tremendous lift they get from playing in front of their fans.

With Varese now playing their best basketball of the season coming into spring, they had one last pending assignment.

Up until March, the team was struggling severely every time they had to play away from home, to the point they were dangerously close to the relegation zone in the extremely balanced Serie A standings.

That last hurdle however has been overcome in recent weeks, with Varese claiming big wins on the road which enable them to travel to Chalon-sur-Saone for the Final Four knowing they have a strong chances of clinching a play-off spot in the Serie A after they return home.

More importantly, they are now confident they can win on the road, and that is possibly the most important thing anybody can ask for before facing Final Four hosts Elan Chalon, in the Semi-Finals.

Centrepieces: Maalik Wayns and Chris Wright share the point guard spot and occasionally also need to coincide on the floor, as each averages over 25 minutes of playing time per game. They also share a fantastic ability to penetrate and are responsible for generating Varese's game, normally using a high screen to either drive to the basket or to kick out to one of many shooters which Varese can line across the three-point arc. None of this would work as efficiently though without the team's crucial inside reference, Brandon Davies. The big man leads the team in scoring (15.7 points per game) and rebounds (7.7 boards per game) while he draws more fouls than any other player on the team as he is very difficult to guard in the low post.

Number Crunching: Varese's three-point field goal percentage is 42.4%, the highest among all teams which reached the Quarter-Finals and the second-best among all teams in the competition (behind ASVEL). What makes them really special though is that they are the only team whose accuracy from long range improved in every stage. It is indicative that they entered the Quarter-Final play-offs shooting 40.7% from three and surged to a fantastic 51.2% (29-of-56) over their three games against Antwerp.

Flashback: Brandon Davies does not need anybody to show him around the Final Four venue, Le Colisée arena, or the town of Chalon-sur-Saone for that matter. The American center was waived by the Brooklyn Nets in January 2015 and Elan Chalon were the team that lured him to try his luck in Europe. Davies helped Chalon make the Pro A play-offs and his displays in France caught the eye of Varese, who signed him in the summer. One could say that Davies was destined to play in this year's Final Four, one way or the other.
